Nov Women

The Vesta Beginners’ Course:

The course is aimed at men and women who are looking for a new challenge and want to learn to row. If you have played other competitive sports or regularly attend a gym and want to test yourself in a team environment then rowing is the sport for you.

The course will work on your fitness whilst teaching you the core rowing technique. Sessions will take place both on the land and river and you will always be supervised by a coach who will lead the sessions.

There is no obligation to continue or sign-up as a member after the course but we hope you will have enjoyed your time enough that you are interested in joining our Novice Squads in September for the start of the 2015/16 season.

Please go to the Novice Squad page for further information.

Annual Dinner this Friday

We hope you bought your Annual Dinner tickets on time as the booking window is now closed. You can still snap up raffle tickets on the night and be in with the chance of winning a week’s holiday in Cyprus. (And who wouldn’t want to swap this incessant rain for a few rays of Paphos sunshine?)

Make sure you don’t miss any important details, check the Frequently Asked Questions for info about table plans, transportation or the after-party, and, most of all, have a good time!

Welcome new members!

Hello all newbies! The new rowing season is an exciting time to join or rejoin the madness. So here are a few tips to make sure you find integrating into Vesta life easy peasy.

1. Do the V.R.C.! New-members-thumb

2. Sign up for the all-vesta mailing list.

3. Drink (and eat) in the bar. It’s totally chilled out and friendly, plus drinking beer buys new boats.

4. Learn about the club and get involved – here is a good place to start.

Good luck for 2013-14 everyone! Any questions, email me on comms@vestarowing.co.uk. Bye for now, Cheryl

Blackstaffe Day on Saturday!

Practice is frowned upon and not becoming of ladies & gentlemen – ‘Love’ Doubles seen doing so before the event to gain an advantage will be dealt with appropriately at the party…you have been warned!

BBQ

Dick will be running a BBQ throughout the afternoon from about 1 o’clock
Standard fare of meat, bread and a gesture of salad.

The Party

If you’re not able to an all-dayer then the party will kick-off at 19:30 and we have a late licence until 2 AM.
Most importantly, the evening is being sorted by the Dev men’s squad and is a…

RUBIK’S CUBE PARTY

The rules: Everyone wears solid-coloured items of clothing in the Rubik’s Cube colours: White, red, blue, orange, yellow and green.
Each person should wear atleast one item in each colour.
During the party, people swap items of clothing with others
The aim is to be dressed from head to toe in a single colour by the end of the night.

Volunteers

To run the day we will need people to help out.
For the regatta + BBQ, email Deckchair: vicecaptain@vestarowing.co.uk
For a bar shift, email Thea: thea.vrc@gmail.com
The bar is going to be open quite a while – so please lend a hand whenever you see it short-staffed.

See you all there!

Peterborough pot!

Weekend of 10/11th September, five of the senior women travelled north to Peterborough regatta for a bit of ‘fun’ summer racing.

Nicola Pocock, Lotti Trigle, Charlotte Lennox and Kerry Evans planned to enter the women’s IM3 quads event, however once the draw came out we discovered Kerry was unable to stay late enough to race the final due to prior evening commitments. Luckily Gemma Etherington was willing to fill the seat.

The first Vesta race on Saturday was Athene McGregor-Macdonald competing in W.IM3.1x, but didn’t make the final. She then took to the water again to race in the W.MasB.1x, finishing 2nd.

The W.IM3.4x boated ready to warm up only to realise a 1km course doesn’t have a lot of space to warm up. After an interesting start we came 2nd in the heat making it through to the final.

On the start line of the final we realised we were probably the only crew over the age of 18 so keen to put some juniors in their place! Having had a much better start than the heat we led the whole way down the course. In the last 250m we had a close call with a buoy vs. blade situation but held our lead to cross the line first. For Lotti and Charlotte this was their first win in Vesta kit.

Sunday proved to be more successful for Athene, making it through to the repercharge in the W IM3 1x event.

Maidenhead Regatta

Kat Hedges raced for Vesta at Maidenhead regatta with her old club, EERC, at the weekend, and they won WMasters A/B/C quads and WMasters C 4+ over the 500m course on Saturday.

Both winning verdicts were over 2 lengths, which given the short course is a fair distance for a previously untried combo. To quote Kat,  “I love Masters racing.”

Vesta also raced in a Mixed 4x and a Mixed 2x racing on Saturday at Maidenhead. Paul Mew and Zena were entered in IM2 mixed doubles, in Paul’s words, “rather ambitiously”. In fact, they had a decent race with good steering but didn’t have the power to beat Eton Excelsior.

The masters mixed quad (Anna, Deb, Bryan and Bijan) had a problem on the way to the start. The steering shoe came away from the footplate so Bijan had to complete the race rather cautiously with no steering. The trailed way behind as a result.

Vesta’s crews were cheered up by tea and the best cakes ever at the regatta enclosure where they watched Kat win.

Thanks to Kat and Paul for sending in new their contributions.
