Novice Rowing

Want to learn how to row? Read on to learn about our novice programme.

Vesta is a competitive rowing club. Our novice programme is designed to give you the skills and fitness to row competitively, with the aim for you to move into our intermediate and senior squads in your second season. Rowing is a high commitment sport. The average training week involves 8x sessions with a mix of water and land training, plus races throughout the year.

We run two intakes for beginners each year. The first is our main season, which runs from September to July. We typically accept novices up until the end of October. After this time you’ll have too much catching up to do,  so we don’t take on further beginners. We also run a short ‘taster’ programme each summer where you learn to row over a 7 week period. This typically starts in July and is slightly less intensive, with 4x weekly sessions.

Vesta Novice Squads Learn to Row

Who – can join?

We are looking for men and women with the desire and attitude to become ambitious club rowers. You will need to have a good base level of fitness, be aged 18 or over, be able to swim and some previous experience of competitive sport is a definite advantage.

What – is rowing and Vesta like?

Vesta is a mixed, very friendly, welcoming club, with a great fleet of boats and an excellent bar! We are a true members’ club run by volunteers.

Rowing is the ultimate team sport and is highly competitive.  It requires high levels of fitness and strength combined with technique and so consistent attendance at training is important to progress. If you like the idea of testing yourself and working in a team to achieve goals then rowing is definitely the sport for you!

Where – do you train?

There will be regular land training sessions based at the club on Putney Embankment and weekend sessions on the water. At Vesta, you’ll have access to our gym, quality boat fleet and a dedicated coaching team.

Novice WomenWhen?

The season runs from September to July with both winter and summer racing. We accept beginners up until the end of October for our main season. We also run a summer learn to row course during the off  season for 7 weeks starting in July. (Next course starts July 2017. Register your interest for our July 2017 learn to row course.)

If you really want to get started with rowing but you’ve missed the window to join our novice programme then we recommended you contact Barn Elms, just down the river from us. Unlike Vesta they are not a competitive rowing club and instead offer short learn to row courses throughout the year.
